Burt's Greenhouses

Discounts and Warranties

Burt's Greenhouses warranty applies to all product grown and sold by us at either our main location in Odessa or at one of our designated satellite greenhouses. To benefit from this warranty you must keep your original receipt. If the receipt is missing and the purchase was made in Odessa at our main location we may be able to help through reference to our database recordings of your purchases. However we can only do this if you gave your name at the time of the transaction so that the purchase can be traced back to you.

The warranty is a replacement warranty only until the end of July since that is the end of our season. Warranty on perennials extends to the following spring (one winter survival).

StoryExamples
If you are a regular retail customer at our main location in Odessa you may be entitled to special or volume discounts. Please note that discounts will not apply to products at 'special' or 'sale' prices, however the total amount spent helps to move your purchases to a new level of volume discount.

Here are the current special discounts:
Type of discountPercent reduction
None0%
Senior (Wednesdays only please - Wednesday is our Seniors' Day) 10%
Kingston Horticultural Society Member10%
Triple B coupon10%

Please note that only one of these special discounts can apply to any one transaction, and discounts reach a maximum at 20%. You can have a volume and a special discount on the same transaction - for example if you are at 10% volume discount you can still get a special discount on your discounted total.

If you choose to offer your name each time you buy we will track your purchases. These can lead to entitlement to discounts depending on how much you spend. The greater your purchases, the higher the discount. If you choose not to offer a name we cannot track transactions for you. However if in a single transaction you pass either of the volume levels we can still apply the discount on that transaction. Here's how it works:

  • During a season or in a single transaction, you spend less than $50 - no discount
  • ... or ... between $50 and $200, 10% discount
  • ... or ... over $200, 20% discount
  • These discounts only apply to cash and carry purchases at our main location in Odessa
  • Our computer system maintains an account for you, recording your purchases; as soon as your cumulative purchases in that season exceed either $50 or $200 you immediately get a discount not only on your current purchases but also a 'back discount' on your past purchases in the season as recorded in our system
  • Discount entitlements are carried forward one year only
  • Where a special discount from the table above applies, and also a volume discount, the second discount will apply to the net amount after the first discount, not on the original total.

Mary (a new customer) buys 4 hanging baskets at $10 on May 15, no discount
On June 1 of the same year, Mary buys $20 in assorted plants.
Mary's purchases are now greater than $50 so her discount moves to 10%. Her receipt on June 1 shows (to keep the example simple taxes are excluded):

John (a customer from last year in which he purchased plants totalling $60 and therefore enjoyed a discount level of 10%) buys $20 in assorted plants in the new season.
John's discount stays at 10% from last year. His receipt shows (to keep the example simple taxes are excluded):

Alan (a customer for many years, each year he buys $20 of plants) buys $20 in assorted plants in the new season.
No discount applies since he has not purchased over $50.00 in a season.

Hannah buys $40 in assorted plants, then a week later buys $20 of plants at 'special' prices.
Hannah's purchases are now greater than $50 so her discount level moves to 10%. Her receipt shows (to keep the example simple taxes are excluded):
Plants20.00

(10% off the total for previous purchase since those plants were at regular prices and she has now purchased plants totalling greater than $50)

Ed and Elsie bought $300 in 1999, in that year they enjoyed a 20% discount. In 2000 they purchased only $20, and still enjoyed the 20% discount that carried forward from 1999. In 2001 they purchased $30 of plants, but their discount level went back to 0% since in the previous year their purchases were less than $50. In 2002 their discount level is again 0% until they regain their entitlement.

Tim is a member of the Kingston Horticultural Society and therefore entitled to a 10% discount on his purchases. He is a regular customer and is entitled to a volume discount of 10% because of past purchases in the previous year. Say Tim buys a plant for $10.00. He will get a 10% discount for volume (amounting to $1.00) and a KHS discount of 10% on the $10.00 less the volume discount of $1.00, ie $0.90. So his final cost is $8.10 plus taxes. It does not matter which discount is applied first in this system, the result is the same.
Alice is a member of the Kingston Horticultural Society, and normally would be entitled to a 10% discount. Her current volume discount level is 20%, and when she asks for the extra 10% Society discount to be applied the Point of Sale software does not add the 10%. This is because discounts cannot exceed 20%. At the 10% volume discount level, the society discount would still be applied on the balance after the volume discount has been applied.
